Seoul's infra-architectural hybrid urban model of typological islands and megastructures
PhD: Università della Svizzera italiana, 2022
English
The thesis looks at the megapolitan condition of Seoul to propose a new form of urbanization via an infra-architectural model. The study unfolds the historical urban evolution of Seoul that formed its distinctive typological islands that plug into an expanding underground network of transportation infrastructure and architectural collective spaces that form a continuous megastructure. As a result, the research reconstitutes theories on megastructures, metabolism, structuralism that were once developed in the 1950s and 1960s, as existent through this model, demonstrating the formation of the megacity of Seoul as an architectural construct rather than a formless urban sprawl.
