This chapter presents the Great Isaiah Scroll as an archaeological artifact whose material features preserve traces of its history. Adopting a material approach, it reconstructs the scroll’s biography, from its production and use to its deposition in Cave 1Q. Particular attention is given to the material evidence for the bisection of the scroll and its implications for understanding the textual transmission and reception of the Book of Isaiah.
