English Faced with the despatialization of historical dynamics that accompanies the globalization
of the end of the 20th century, the rise of the spatial turn reflects the need to apprehend
space as a factor participating directly in the construction of social and cultural facts. As a
precursor of this turning point, Henri Lefebvre considers that the objectivity of space is
defined by the material practices of social reproduction. Through this perspective, the
article proposes to read the vicissitudes of the Alpine Space as a product and producer of
urbanity and rurality. In particular, the article attempts to deconstruct the relationship,
built by modernity, around the double antinomy of «centre/periphery» and «rurality/
urbanity», while showing that if the notions of urbanity and rurality have been questioned
in their territorial and landscape dimension, they remain useful categories for
reading the ways in which individuals and communities have constructed (and continue
to construct) their relationship to space in relation to material practices and symbolic
codes and representations.
