<dc:description xmlns:ns0="xml" ns0:lang="en">In this research we consider how the three main Swiss linguistic groups define their own collective identities. We carry out our analysis relying on a theoretical relationship between the political behaviors, the structure of a public space, the linguistic affiliation and the construction of codes that make visible a collectivity to itself and to the others. In the specific Swiss context there are three main linguistic collectivities, and each of them has its own way to institutionalize its idiom. The two Latin-speaking groups, with some differences between themselves, use a standard language in almost every context of the social life. The most interesting situation is the German-speaking group, in which we can establish the existence of an important form of diglossia: the members of this collectivity use the German-standard as a written language and the only oral institutionalized Swiss-German in the largest part of the speaking contexts. As a matter of fact, the relationship between a society and its language does not determine the particular contents of the public discussion but it merely defines the frame in which the different issues can be manifested. The debates about the naturalization regulation, however, are very representative of the perception that a collectivity has about itself. From a methodological point of view, we consider two newspapers from each linguistic region and we adopt a comparative frame analysis of their contents during the four voting campaigns (1983, 1994, 2004, 2008). In addition we compare three televised debates broadcasted before the voting of 2004 in order to understand the media strategies used in the different collectivities.</dc:description>
